The project keeps going on! What has happened since our last update? The computers have been cleaned, stickers have been removed and, last but not least, the computers now have new operating systems!
Last Thursday evening was dedicated to the computers, with Daniel and Hampus starting to change operating systems from Windows to Ubuntu on all machines (almost a hundred). Hampus left quite early, due to hunger issues, but was replaced by Matilda. Matilda continued the cleaning and removal of stickers and Daniel went on and completed the installation of Ubuntu.
How was the installation executed, you may wonder? Well, Hampus had downloaded the open-source operating system Ubuntu to five USB sticks, which were used. In other words, we could install Ubuntu on five computers at a time. To start with, this was quite complicated, but as time passed it became natural and at the end of the evening, Daniel almost could have done it while sleeping. The fun thing about this, is that all computers need to have names. We came up with the brilliant idea of giving them all unique animal names. Our “computer zoo” now has a lion, a polar bear, a platypus, an eel, an armadillo and almost a hundred other animals. Yes, we had a lot of fun coming up with these.
If you ever wonder why there is a certain smell of lemon on Chalmers, just ask Matilda Horppu. She is (or at least was this Thursday) the leader of the computer cleaning operation. The lemon smell comes from a tube filled with liquid for stickers removal. Some of the stickers, like the “stöldmärkt” stickers, are very hard to get rid of. That is why we are using this spray. Almost all stickers are now gone, thanks to Matilda.
What is next? On Tuesday next week, more computers will arrive! Daniel and Hampus will be there to welcome them to their new temporary home, while Matilda will celebrate her well-deserved birthday since she has managed to live such a long life by now.
